August 13, 1949- May 29, 2022On May 29, 2022 our beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend to many departed his earthly home bound for glory, from Centra Southside Hospital in Farmville, Virginia.
Welford, “Monk” to many, was born August 13, 1949 to Delaware and Evelyn Jones. He was reared in Buckingham County, joining the Baptist Union Baptist Church at an early age. He graduated from Carter G. Woodson High School.
Welford defended the United States by joining military service after high school. He is honored as a Vietnam Vet. After service duty, Welford moved his family to Washington D.C. While in DC, he was a jack-of-all-trades working many jobs including Frito Lay, The Library of Congress, and ADT. Upon returning to Buckingham, he worked for VADOC, Thomasville Furniture, and James River State Park. He also assisted many churches in the installation of audio-visual equipment.
After retirement, Welford became instrumental in the affairs at Baptist Union Baptist Church as the Chairman of the Trustee Board and working with the A-V Ministry. With the loss of both legs, his dedication to the church did not decrease and it was a pleasure to see him walk into the church on Sunday mornings, the true soldier spirit.
Welford was preceded in death by his father Delaware, mother Evelyn Jones and brother Freddie Jones. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 54 years, Joann Ford Jones; his daughters Angela Briley and Cheri Jones; his three grandchildren Antonn Briley, Angelique Briley and Kyra Jones; sisters Florence Hill and Sharon Jones, brother Ronnie Jones (Pam); sister-n-laws Ernestine DeBruhl, Alice Johnson (Paul), Dorothy Tyree (Patrick); two Uncles Frank Jones and Rev. Dr. Arthur Jones; a host of nieces and nephews that loved him as “Papa”; many cousins and more friends.
