Marie Banks Johnson was the fourth child of the late Major and Virginia Pollard Banks. She was born on
January 29, 1925, in New Canton, VA and given the name at birth of Annie Marie Banks. Her life’s work
ended when God called her home on Monday, July 18, 2022, at her residence. She was preceded in
death by her parents, sister, Anna B. Lee of Baltimore, MD, brothers Major M. Banks, Jr. and Eddie
Banks, Sr., and grandson, Damel Johnson.
She joined the Zion Grove Baptist Church at an early age, and was a faithful member until her health
declined. She served as a Deaconess, church clerk for many years, and a member of missionary ministry.
Marie attended and graduated from the Buckingham Training School, Dillwyn, VA, where she excelled in
her studies. Unfortunately, she was unable to further her education; therefore for better opportunities,
she moved to Baltimore, MD to live with her sister.
During World War II, she was one of many who wrote encouraging letters to local community soldiers
and this is how she met Hayes M. Johnson, the love of her life. On June 14, 1947, they married and
enjoyed life together for 75 years. From this union two children were born, a son and a daughter.
Marie was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, as well as an elementary substitute school
teacher. She was known as the local hair dresser, self-taught seamstress, and the potato salad queen.
She enjoyed cross-stitch, cross word, word search and gig-saw puzzles. The family and friends spent
many Sunday evenings playing croquet.
