Joe was born on February 22, 1946 to the proud parents of the late Mr. & Mrs.
Clarence and Emma Matthews. He was a member of the New Fork Baptist Church,
in Palmyra, VA.
On October 5, 2020, Joseph A. Matthews departed on the evening train from this
world to his new home.
Joseph went to Jersey to visit his brother and decided to stay in New Jersey.
In 2005, he was united in marriage to Esther M. Matthews. Thus becoming a proud
stepfather and stepgrandfather.
He enjoyed going on cruises and went faithfully every year until he became too ill
to travel. He also had a love and a talent for his garden and plants.
Joe or Big Joe (as he was called in New Jersey) was a truck driver. He operated
Boom Trucks, Dumpsters Trucks, and Tractor Trailers. He also drove a tour bus.
However, his greatest joy was pulling floats. He traveled from New York,
Massachusetts and Connecticut with his floats.
He leaves to cherish his memories his wife, Esther M. Matthews, stepdaughter,
LaTonya Brown, stepgranddaughter, Shanell Holmes of Linden, NJ.; two brothers,
Clarence E. Matthews (Janice) of South Hill, VA; Norman Matthews of Palmyra,
VA; three sisters, Geraldine Freeman (Elijah) of Fredericksburg, VA, Patricia
Whitaker of Richmond, VA; Mary Bolden (George) of Buckingham, VA; sisters-in
law, Patricia Hicks and Wilma Hicks of Elizabeth, NJ; brother-in-law, Wilbert
Hicks of Englewood, NJ; a host of nephews, nieces, and cousins and other family
members all of whom he loved dearly.
