Deacon Hayes Margain Johnson
Hayes Johnson was the oldest of fifteen children of the late Deacon Isaac and Deaconess Nannie
Johnson of Bremo Bluff, Virginia. He was born on April 15, 1922, in Fluvanna County, Virginia. Angels
carried him away Wednesday, July 19, 2023, at The Laurels of University Park, Henrico, Virginia. He was
preceded in death by his wife, Marie B. Johnson.
Hayes joined the West Bottom Baptist Church at an early age and later joined the Zion Grove Baptist
Church. While at Zion Grove Baptist Church, he served as Trustee, Deacon and was an active member
until his health declined. He participated in numerous church activities. Hayes attended and graduated
from S. C. Abrams High School in Fluvanna, Virginia. Unfortunately, he did not further his education;
therefore, he joined the military for better opportunities.
During World War II, he was one of many who received numerous achievements. Buckingham County is
where he met the love of his life, Marie B. Johnson. They married on June 14, 1947, and enjoyed their
marriage for 75 years. Of this union, two children were born: a son and a daughter.
Hayes was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. As a truck driver in the trucking community, he
was known as a “Mockingbird.” Hayes loved family and friends, including his West Bottom and Zion
Grove Baptist Church families. He was a father to many and always provided wisdom and support to
everyone he met. He was a faithful Keystone Lodge No. 188 member and The Buckingham Lining Bar
Gang.
He leaves to two children to cherish his memories, Melvin A. Johnson (Joyce) and Hazel LaVerne Johnson
Ingram (Marshall); grandsons, Sean Ingram (Tanise) and Andre Ingram (Attiyya); six great-grandchildren,
