Obituary

Florence Virginia (Beard) Pugh—the daughter of the late Luther Belford Beard and the late Nola
(Carr) Beard was born on October 21, 1924, in West Grove, Chester County, Pennsylvania. she
departed this life on August 8, 2021, at 4:20 a.m. in Palmyra, Virginia.
Florence was the middle of three children: Ruth (Beard) Stewart and Luther Beard, Jr. both now
deceased.
During her childhood, she lived in West Grove, Chester County, Pennsylvania. The Beard family
attended Enon Baptist Church regularly where she and her siblings were baptized. Her early
education was at the West Grove Elementary School and she graduated from Avon-Grove Area
High School in 1943.
She met and married the late Samuel P. Pugh, Jr. from Coatesville, Chester County,
Pennsylvania in 1945 and later gave birth to their son Samuel P. Pugh III on September 15, 1945.
Since her interests had always been in caring for others, she enrolled in the Henryton School of
Nursing in Marriottsville, Maryland, and graduated in 1950. After her internship at the Henryton
State Hospital, she moved to California to work in the Sepulveda Veterans Medical Center and
then back to Pennsylvania at the Coatesville Veteran’s Medical Center.
In Philadelphia, before her departure to Virginia, she attended the True Light Holy Church on
12 th and Lehigh Streets in Philadelphia, PA with the late Elder Rebecca R. White. This church
and Mount Olive Holy Temple on Broad Street in Philadelphia were a couple of the many
churches under the umbrella of the Mount Sinai Holy Church of America, Inc., of which she was
a devoted member.
She leaves to mourn: her son and daughter-in-law, Samuel and Patricia Pugh, her grandchildren:
Samuel IV, Thomas, Jason Pugh, and Jestine Clayton, and her great-grandchildren: Charles &
Jasmine Duck, Mason Pugh, and Jada & Maya Pugh. As well as nieces and nephews and a host
of relatives and friends.

Addendum to obituary
(Provided by Pastor Virginia Agee)
A life well lived! Woman of God, and character, Prayer warrior and true missionary, is who
Elder Florence Virginia Pugh was. Our hearts are saddened by the passing of this true pillar in
the community, local churches, and the kingdom statewide. There will never be another like her
and the legacy she has left will continue to live on.
Our beloved Elder Florence Pugh slipped away from labor into reward, in the home of Sis Mona
Holmes on Sunday August 8, 2021. She accepted the Lord as her personal savior and received
the gift of the Holy Ghost.

To add a few more churches under the umbrella of Mount Sinai Holy Church of America Inc. in
Virginia, are the Burning Bush Holy Church under the late Elder Lee Houston, Highway of Faith
Holy Church under Bishop Ray McKenzie, True Faith Tabernacle Church under Elder Annie
Mae Harris, Little Rock Holy Church under the late Bishop Lawrence Taylor, and returned to
Highway of Faith Holy Church under Pastor Virginia Agee. She also visited Passion Community
Church Riverside under Robert Toepfort and other local churches.
She lived with Pastor Agee for a while, who was one of her closest friends and in whom she
considered to be family. She was such a joy to have around. Her wisdom and knowledge she
always gave freely.
The Holmes family welcomed her into their home for the last few years of her life. They loved,
cared, and provided for her. Hannah (Holmes), who Elder Pugh considered to be her
granddaughter, enjoyed taking her to fun places, the zoo, the ice cream parlor, and the beach.
Special friends who shared the joys of her daily life and survive to cherish her memory are,
Mona, Hannah, and Caleb Holmes, Connie and Warren Tillman, David Cooke, Ernestine
Murray, Alease Payne, Faith Stuart, and many many more from near and far.
She now has her new address in the presence of the Lord. Amen.
